Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said that Hamas’ top leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a “short-range missile” with a 7-kilogram warhead fired from outside his residence in Tehran, Reuters reports. The IRGC stressed that the attack was carried out by Israel with the support of the “criminal” US government.

“Based on the investigation and analysis, this terrorist act was carried out from outside the guest accommodation with a short-range projectile equipped with a warhead weighing approximately 7 kilograms, accompanied by a powerful explosion,” the statement said.

Earlier there were reports that Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran with an explosive device that was secretly hidden in the guest house where he was staying.

The Revolutionary Guards warned that Iran’s revenge would be “harsh” and taken at the appropriate time, place and manner.

It further said, “The blood of martyr Ismail Haniyeh will be avenged and the daring and terrorist Zionist regime will receive severe punishment.”

Haniyeh, who led Hamas’ political operations from exile in Qatar, was assassinated at 2 a.m. on July 31 when his residence in Tehran was targeted.
