Many foods can provide benefits to your dog’s health. These foods can be easily added to your dog’s diet, regardless of what type of diet you are feeding.

It doesn’t matter where you are, and there are simple things that people can do to make a huge difference in your dog’s health.

Food is an age-old medicine. Although conventional medicine in modern times has moved a lot from the original, it is making a comeback.

Where the art of medicine is loved, there is also love for humanity” Hippocrates.

There has never been much nutrition training in veterinary school and for humans. The training that vets get can be limited and biased. It is for this reason that many veterinarians don’t focus on it.

However, nutrition is still important.

Food Therapy

The foundation of good health is nutrition. It is the body’s fuel and provides the building blocks to maintain health, tissue repair, and energy.

This is why holistic health practitioners place a lot of emphasis on nutrition and supplements.

Food should be considered the most important medicine we give our pets daily. It is essential to provide your dog with healthy, fresh, nutritious, unprocessed, and low-processed Food.

These are the foods that I recommend to my patients every day. These are great foods that can be included in almost any dog’s diet.

Bone Broth

Bone broth has so many benefits for dogs. It is a healing potion.

What exactly is bone broth? It is made from bones that have been simmered for several days in apple cider vinegar. These nutrients are slowly broken down, making them highly bioavailable to your body.

Bone broth has many benefits.

  • Helps to heal leaky gut and improve digestion. All diseases start in the gut (autoimmune disease, asthma, chronic inflammation, allergies, asthma, chronic inflammation, chronic inflammatory disorder, chronic autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic inflammation). Gelatin helps to heal and soothe the mucosal membrane. This is important because it can cause damage to the gut barrier and allow toxins into your bloodstream. Raw milk has many health benefits. It has been proven to improve the immune system and decrease allergies. It’s great for your gut health thanks to its probiotics, digestive enzymes, and other beneficial ingredients. It is also known to help repair the leaky gut and improve skin health.

How about cow milk? I love many things about cow milk, but I prefer goat milk. Goat milk is:

  • Lower lactose content – Less allergenic
  • Because the fat globules in this product are smaller, it is easier to digest and absorb.
  • Higher levels of MCTs (from goat milk to 30-35% vs 15-20% in cow’s milk)
  • Vitamin A, Zinc and Selenium at higher levels

For small dogs, 1/4 cup per day is recommended. Medium dogs should consume 1/2 cup per day, and large dogs should consume 3/4 cup per day. You can start with smaller amounts and then increase your daily intake.

Organ Meats

Organ meat is an essential part of any diet, no matter how it’s prepared, whether you are using commercial raw or homemade meals. Most commercial diets and home chefs will follow the 80-10-10 rule, which means 80% muscle meat and 10% bone, and 10% organ meats. But I prefer a little more.

Nutrient-dense organs and glands. This includes the liver, kidneys, adrenal glands, pancreas, brain, stomach (tripe), and heart. Blood builders are liver and other organ meats. They are also known as blood tonics in Traditional Chinese Medicine. We know that carnivores favour organs. They choose the first.

You should consider including these organ meats in your dog’s diet.

  • Liver: vitamin A, B, iron, folate, zinc, amino acids, ribonucleic acid. Research demonstrates its great value for building strength, endurance and muscle mass.
  • Kidney: vitamin A, B12, riboflavin, iron
  • Heart: CoQ10, vitamin B12, amino acids, collagen
  • Vitamin C for the adrenal glands
  • Brain: omega-3, selenium, zinc, vitamin B12
  • Tripe (green, unbleached): Digestive enzymes, probiotics and selenium. Zin, vitamin A12.

Eggs

Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse. They are considered the complete protein, and they are 100% bioavailable. They are easy to include in your dog’s diet.

They offer:

  • High-quality protein and high-quality amino acids
  • Vitamins A, D, E complex B vitamins
  • Omega-3s
  • Antioxidants
  • Calcium, selenium, zinc

Eggs are great for cardiovascular health. Don’t believe the hype about eggs being bad for your heart. Eggs contain cholesterol that regulates cholesterol levels. The brain and liver depend heavily on cholesterol to function normally. They are also beneficial for skin and eye health.

Free-range eggs are best. You should not confuse cage-free with free-range eggs. Two-thirds more omega-3, three times more vitamin E, seven times more beta-carotene and 60% more vitamin A are found in free-range eggs. They also have a 98% less chance of carrying salmonella.

Fresh eggs are acceptable. A large dog should have one egg daily, while a smaller dog might need half an egg. You can also go with one egg every other day if that is what you prefer.

Omega-3 Oils

I recommend small and oily fish obtain omega-3 oils regularly.

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Support in joint
  • Kidney function
  • Heart health
  • Eye and skin health

Because they are small fish, anchovies and sardines have not had the time to absorb the toxic chemicals found in larger fish. They are cleaner and provide an incredible source of omega-3s. Avoid farm-raised fish.

Oily fish can be very rich, so you should start small and build up. Start small with half a sardine daily for smaller dogs. For larger dogs, increase the amount to tin each day.

You can also find omega-3 oils from other sources:

  • Krill oil – is very bioavailable but over-fished, so it’s not great for the environment.
  • Calamari oil – This has the highest level of DHA/EPA, and it’s also the most sustainable and with the lowest negative impact.
  • Cod liver oil is derived from the liver of fish. It is a rich source of DHA, EPA and vitamin A.

MCT Oil

MCT oil is another powerful healing food I recommend to all my patients. MCT is medium-chain triglyceride. It’s good fat. It is thermally stable and does not easily oxidize, even at high temperatures. It’s great for cooking.

  • Anti-microbial (bacteria, yeast/candida), – lauric Acid
  • High in antioxidants and minerals

It is a healthy fat that helps fight off cancer. We know that cancer cells can’t use fats. Cancer cells require glucose (or sugars) to fuel themselves, which carbs can break down into. A diet rich in healthy fats can be used to help stop cancer.

MCT oil should not contain lauric acid. Most dogs love the taste. The recommended daily intake is approximately 1 teaspoon per 10-20 lbs. You can start slowly and gradually increase your daily intake.

Kelp

One of the main reasons that kelp is good for dogs is its high level of trace minerals. Soil is becoming increasingly mineral-deficient. We need to find other sources of trace minerals. The ocean provides these minerals. It is the lifeblood of the planet.

Kelp seaweed’s fronds and leaves absorb many more nutrients than the roots. Sea vegetables are 10-20 times more nutritious than plants that grow on the ground. Sea vegetables are a great source of trace minerals and complex phytonutrients.
