Usha Vance, wife of Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance, defended her husband’s comments criticising adults without children and downplayed his statement calling some Democratic politicians “childless cat ladies” as “jokes”. JD Vance and Usha have three children since their marriage in 2014 – two sons, Evan and Vivek, and a daughter, Mirabel.
In a 2021 Fox News interview, Vance commented that the US was being run by “a bunch of childless women who are unhappy with their lives and choices, and want to make the rest of the country unhappy, too”.

In an interview with Fox News, Indian-American lawyer Usha Vance explained that her husband’s comments, which have come under renewed scrutiny since he joined former President Donald Trump’s campaign, were aimed at addressing the challenges faced by parents and the role of the government in their lives.
“The reality is that JD made a comment – well, he told a joke – to illustrate a point that he wanted to make about the substantive issues,” Usha said in her first solo interview with Ainsley Earhardt. “I just wish people would focus more on the issues rather than focusing on a few words.”

Usha Vance criticised the media for misrepresenting her husband, saying, “When you watch the news, you often see a caricature of a person. But he is actually a very nice person. I want people to listen to what he says and understand his meaning and purpose.”
J.D. Vance defended his comments on Megan Kelly’s SiriusXM show, saying that becoming a parent drastically changes a person’s perspective and insisted he would not back down from his comments despite the criticism.
A recent poll found Vance had a net favorability rating of -3 percentage points among registered voters, with 44% having a negative opinion of him and 41% having a positive opinion of him.
Usha Vance, Daughter of Indian immigrants, grew up in San Diego and met JD Vance at Yale Law School. They married in 2014 and have three children. Usha, a lawyer, has worked for Supreme Court Justices John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh.
In her interview, Usha described her husband as a “genuine person” who has similar interests, adding, “He genuinely cares about having meaningful conversations, improving the lives of those struggling, and making a positive change.”
