There was a rush of media persons and visitors at Chilukuri Santhamma’s house in Akkayyapalem in the city on Wednesday (November 6) evening after the results of the US presidential election were declared and JD Vance was elected the Vice President of the US.

Usha Chilukuri Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, who was elected as the running mate of newly elected President Donald Trump, has ties to Visakhapatnam. The city is home to his grandmother Chilukuri Santhamma (96), a physics professor.

“I am happy that someone from our family has become the second woman in America, I watched the election results on TV. Usha’s grandfather is Ram Subramaniam Shastri and my husband is a brother,” a jubilant Ms Santhamma told media persons, who reached her home straight on Wednesday evening.

However, Ms Santhamma regrets that many Indians are leaving their homeland in search of greener pastures. He believed that opportunities should be made available in India so that talent can be retained in the country.

Ms. Usha is the daughter of Chilukuri Radhakrishna, who is the son of Rama Subramaniam Sastry, who is the younger brother of Ms. Santhamma’s husband. Shri Radhakrishna did his mechanical engineering from IIT Madras and later moved to America.

After retiring from Andhra University at the age of 60, Ms. Santhamma still teaches physics at Centurion University in Vizianagaram.

“Radha Krishna had gone to America long ago and settled there and Usha was born there. They should not forget their roots and Indian origins,” Ms Santhamma had said The Hindu Last.
