US Vice President Kamala Harris formally secured the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination on Monday, becoming the first Black woman to lead a majority party, the Associated Press reported.
The nomination of 59-year-old Harris, who is set to become the first woman vice president in US history in the 2020 elections, became official on Monday night after five days of online voting by delegates to the Democratic National Convention.
On July 2, Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said Kamala Harris had secured enough Democratic delegate votes to become the party’s nominee for president.
The US Vice President acknowledged the same on Christmas Day, saying it was an “honour” for him to be the Democratic candidate for the November presidential election.
“I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about inspiring people to unite in the spirit of patriotism and fight for the best,” she tweeted.
