US, Qatar and Egypt call for talks with Israel and Hamas on August 15

The leaders of the United States, Egypt and Qatar on Thursday called on Israel and Hamas to meet for talks on August 15 to finalise a ceasefire in Gaza and a deal for the release of hostages.

The three countries, which are trying to mediate a deal, said in a joint statement that the talks could take place in Doha or Cairo.

“A framework agreement is now on the table, with implementation details still to be worked out,” he said. “There is no question of wasting any more time, nor does any side have any excuses for delay. It is time to release the hostages, start a ceasefire and implement this agreement.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli negotiators would be there. He said the aim was to “finalise the details and implement the framework agreement”.

There was no immediate comment from Hamas.

The war in Gaza began with a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, which left 1,200 people dead and 250 hostages, according to Israeli figures.

At least 39,699 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli military operation in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, although the ministry does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.
