US Presidential Elections 2024: Turkey’s President Erdogan wishes new US president will harbour better ties

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said he hopes the new US president will initiate better relations, as Ankara has been disappointed by both Republicans and Democrats in the past, broadcaster HaberTurk and others reported on Thursday.

The 2024 US election will be held in November between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, who is also the US Vice President. During his presidency, Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Turkey over Russian defense purchases.

Speaking to Turkish journalists in New York before departing the United Nations General Assembly, Erdogan said Turkey still wanted reimbursement for money spent on F-35 fighter jets after it was dropped from the jet program because of the purchase from Russia.

“My hope is that whoever comes will not make us feel the absence of the one who left,” Erdogan said. “They all made us feel this disappointment. Republicans and Democrats.”
