Turkiye arrested More than 100 suspected members of the Islamic State group have been detained this week, officials said on Friday (August 30, 2024), the latest mass detention targeting the terrorist organization.

There have been several major attacks by IS in the country, including a 2017 nightclub shooting that killed dozens.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the fresh raids were carried out across the country, including in the capital Ankara and Turkey’s largest city Istanbul.

The arrests of 119 people this week have been preceded by other mass arrests, including 99 announced in early August.

Since the collapse of the self-proclaimed “caliphate” in 2019, some suspected IS members have settled in Turkiye.

Turkish authorities said more than 3,600 people with suspected links to the jihadist group had been arrested since June 2023.

Two of the attackers who killed 145 people at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall last March spent several weeks in Turkiye before travelling to Russia, according to local authorities, for an attack claimed by IS.
