The Commerce and Industry Ministry has recommended imposition of anti-dumping duty on aluminium foil imported from China as surge in imports from the neighbouring country has captured nearly one-third of India’s market despite adequate local production capacity.

The recommendation contained in the report published by the ministry late on Friday (August 30, 2024) and submitted to the government for approval is aimed at addressing the threat to the domestic manufacturing industry, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies said in the report.

It recommended a duty ranging between $619 and $873 per metric ton on foil with a thickness of up to 80 microns, not including aluminium foil with a thickness of less than 5.5 microns for non-capacitor applications.

Aluminium foil is used extensively as a packaging material for preservation and protection of food products.
