Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday (August 23, 2024) that it has postponed hosting the BIMSTEC summit of leaders of seven South Asian countries next month until the formation of a new administration.

Thailand is currently under a caretaker government after a court last week removed Sutra Thaweesin as prime minister and his successor. Patongtarn Shinawatra has not yet announced the names of his cabinet.

The summit was scheduled to be held in Bangkok on September 3-4. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) comprises Thailand, India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan and its leaders meet for a summit every two years.
