At least 12 people were killed in shelling by Sudanese paramilitary forces on Saturday (November 2, 2024) in the north of the vast Darfur region, which is almost entirely under their control, activists said.
Five people were also injured in a bombardment by the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF), which has been fighting the regular army since April last year, according to the Local Resistance Committee, one of hundreds of volunteer groups coordinating aid across the country.
“RSF fighters captured three people after a bombardment north of the town of Kutum,” the committee said.
The region’s governor, former rebel leader Mini Minawi, who is close to the regular army, said paramilitaries had set fire to about 20 villages in the area.
The army has been largely confined to El-Fashr, the capital of North Darfur state, after paramilitaries took over the rest of the region last year.
RSF fighters have laid siege to the city of about 2 million people since May and have already declared famine in the Zamzam camp for displaced persons in its south.
United Nations officials have expressed growing concern about the grave conditions in Darfur and throughout Sudan.
“The people of Sudan are living a nightmare of violence – thousands of civilians have been killed, and countless others have been subjected to unspeakable atrocities, including mass rape and sexual assault,” UN chief Antonio Guterres told the Security Council late last month. Have to face.”
