A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck 34 km (21 miles) off the eastern Taiwanese city of Hualien on Friday, the Taiwan Meteorological Administration said. There were no immediate reports of damage from the second major quake to hit the island in less than a day.
The quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. Authorities said metro services in the city were running at a slow pace.
The Meteorological Administration said the quake had a depth of 9.7 kilometres, and earlier on Thursday a 5.7 magnitude quake had struck off Taiwan’s northeastern coast.
Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is vulnerable to earthquakes.
In April, nine people were killed and more than 900 injured in Taiwan’s biggest earthquake in at least 25 years.
