Russian bombing of eastern Ukraine The governor of the Donetsk region said six people were killed on Wednesday (August 28, 2024), while Moscow announced it had captured another village in the region.
The industrial region has faced some of the worst fighting since Russia’s invasion, with the Kremlin claiming it will seize the region along with three others in 2022.
“In the morning the Russians killed four people and destroyed a house in Izmailivka,” regional official Vadim Filyashkin said on social media.
Two more people were killed in separate attacks near Chasiv Yar, which damaged more than a dozen houses, he said.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday (August 28, 2024) that Russian forces had captured another settlement about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the logistics center of Pokrovsk.
Regional authorities recently ordered large-scale mandatory evacuations, and the Russian military is moving toward Pokrovsk, where about 60,000 people once lived.
Mr Filashkin said that on Tuesday (August 27, 2024), 2,718 people, including 392 children, were evacuated from the frontline areas.
He later said on state media that about 30,000 people remained in Pokrovsk and surrounding villages and that banks in the town would be closed by Sunday (September 1, 2024).
“This also applies to all other institutions that provide services to the public. So if people come out as quickly as possible and save their lives, everything will be fine,” he said.
An employee of a government service center in Pokrovsk told AFP He said by phone that it was unclear whether the facility would remain open as Russian forces approached.
“I can’t tell you what will happen in the future — in a day, in two days, next week,” the employee said.
“Everything is shutting down in our town. Everything. No shops will open. Nothing. Most of the shops are shutting down.”
Kiev had urged residents of the region, which has been partially controlled by Russian proxy forces since 2014, to leave after the Kremlin invaded Ukraine.
