Russia launches a barrage of drones, cruise and ballistic missiles at Kyiv, Ukraine’s military says

The Ukrainian Air Force said on Monday (September 2, 2024) that Russia has fired a barrage of drones, cruise and ballistic missiles at Kiev.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said emergency services were called to the Holosiivsky and Solomiansky districts of Kiev. Klitschko said one person was injured by falling debris in the Shevchenkivsky district.

“Everything will be answered. The enemy will realize it,” presidential office chief Andrei Yermak wrote on his Telegram page after the attack.

According to the air force, Russia also carried out ballistic missile launches and several drone attacks, along with several cruise missiles targeting Kiev.

Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s city military administration, said more than 10 cruise missiles, about 10 ballistic missiles and a drone fired at the Ukrainian capital and its suburbs were destroyed by Ukraine’s air defence systems.

According to Ukrainian media, an explosion also occurred in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. The head of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Sinyhubov, confirmed the early morning attack in Kharkiv’s Industrialny district and said it set a residential building and several other buildings on fire.

This attack happened a day later. Russia’s military has reportedly intercepted and destroyed 158 Ukrainian drones It is the biggest Ukrainian attack in the nearly two-and-a-half-year-long war, which has targeted several regions in Russia.

The incident comes weeks after Ukrainian forces intruded into Russia’s Kursk region, which Moscow’s forces have so far struggled to push back and to which the Kremlin has vowed to respond.
