Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (September 5, 2024) held a fruitful meeting with his Singapore counterpart Lawrence Wong during which they elevated bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Mr Modi is in Singapore on a two-day visit At the invitation of Mr. Wong.
Before the talks with Mr Wong, Mr Modi was given a rousing welcome at the Singapore Parliament building. He also signed the visitor’s book there.
“A new chapter in the relationship: the establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Lawrence Wongsted held a useful meeting in Singapore today,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on Twitter after the meeting.
“The leaders agreed to elevate the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They comprehensively reviewed various aspects of bilateral relations, covering areas such as advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalisation, healthcare and medicine, skill development and sustainability,” he said.
The meeting between the two leaders comes days after Mr Wong assumed office and Mr Modi began his third term as Prime Minister.
After the talks, the two leaders also exchanged four MoUs.
Later, Prime Minister Modi will also meet President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
He will meet Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. Mr Lee will host lunch for Mr Modi.

Mr Modi will also meet business leaders from Singapore and interact with people involved in the country’s semiconductor ecosystem.
Mr Modi and Mr Wong will also visit a semiconductor manufacturing plant.
Mr Modi left for Singapore on Wednesday after concluding his first visit to India. Trip to BruneiThis was the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister.
He was given a warm welcome by the Indian community on his arrival.
