Rahat Rao was set on fire by a man aged 24 or 25 years on Friday. He has been admitted to a hospital and is in a critical condition. According to sources, Rao is not an agent of Pakistan’s intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Canadian police have released the photo of the accused who set Rao on fire.
Rao is very active in Canada and has been involved in several protests since the death of Nijjar in June last year.
Nijjar was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey on June 18 last year. His name was included in a list released by the Indian government along with 40 other ‘designated terrorists’.
Her death had sparked a major diplomatic row between India and Canada, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleging last September that his wife had been murdered. Possible involvement of Indian government agents in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist.
India strongly rejected Trudeau’s claims, saying that “absurd” and “inspired”.
Nijjar’s murder is being investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
