Faiz Hameed, the former chief of Pakistan’s intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was detained by the country’s powerful military in connection with a housing scheme scam.
In a statement on Monday, the Pakistan Army’s public relations wing said, “Following the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, a detailed investigation was conducted by the Pakistan Army to ascertain the veracity of the complaints made against Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed (Retd) in the Top City case. As a result, appropriate disciplinary action has been initiated against Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed (Retd) under the provisions of the Pakistan Army Act.”
“Furthermore, several cases of violation of Pakistan Army Act after retirement have also come to light. Field General Court Martial proceedings have been initiated and Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed (retd) has been taken into military custody,” it said.
Top City, a private housing scheme in Pakistan, had filed charges against Hameed, claiming that he had planned a raid on the offices and residence of its owner Moiz Khan.
According to a Dawn report, the Pakistan Army had formed an inquiry committee in April to investigate allegations of misuse of power against Hameed.
The committee was set up following an order by Pakistan’s Supreme Court in November last year, which said that allegations of “extremely serious nature” against Hameed “cannot be ignored” as they would damage the reputation of the country’s institutions if proved true.
The Supreme Court asked the housing society owner to approach the concerned departments, including the Defence Ministry, to take action against the former spy chief and his associates.
In March this year, a Rawalpindi court had sent Najaf Hameed, brother of the former ISI chief, to jail on 14-day judicial remand in connection with the case.
