Opportunity to review wrong approaches of American government: Iran on US polls

Donald Trump

After Donald Trump won the presidency on Wednesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai said on Thursday that the US election is an opportunity to review the US government’s “wrong approach”.

Former President Donald Trump’s return to the White House could mean a toughening of US oil sanctions against Iran, which he introduced in 2018 after walking out of the nuclear deal between Tehran and global powers.

Baghai said, “We have had bitter experiences with past policies and approaches of various American governments. The election is an opportunity to review the wrong approaches of the past.”

Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian said in September that Tehran was ready to end its nuclear standoff with the West, which it accuses of seeking the ability to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.

Outgoing President Joe Biden attempted to revive the nuclear deal with Iran in talks but failed to reach a new deal. Trump has not clarified whether he might reopen the issue.

“What will be important for Iran will be how we evaluate the actions of the U.S. government,” Baghai said.
