A driver drove his truck into a crowd of people at a bus stop in central Israel on Sunday (October 27, 2024), killing one person and injuring more than two dozen, doctors and police said. .

Police did not immediately say whether the incident, which occurred near the headquarters of the Mossad spy agency and other Israeli intelligence sites, was an attack or an accident.

In a separate incident, Israeli soldiers killed a man whom the army said tried to stab them during an “anti-terrorism” operation near Jerusalem, calling it a “terrorist attack” against soldiers.

“The truck collided in Ramat Hasharon, north of Israel’s commercial hub Tel Aviv, injuring at least 29 people, many of them seriously,” emergency services provider Magen David Adom said in a statement.

“One of the injured later died,” the hospital where he was taken for treatment said.

Preliminary police findings showed that the truck driver also hit a bus that had stopped at the same station to drop passengers, police said in a statement.

Police said civilians at the scene “shot the truck driver and killed him”.

Paramedic Elior Yosef, who arrived at the bus stop after the collision, said he saw eight people “trapped under the truck”.

“Many other casualties were either lying or walking near the truck,” Magen David Adom was quoted as saying in the statement.

Officers and ambulance arrived at the scene, where AFP Journalists saw police cordon off the area and doctors treating the injured, and a helicopter hovering overhead.

The “heroic attack” near the Mossad headquarters was in response to crimes committed by the Zionist occupation against Palestinians, Palestinian militant group Hamas said in a statement.

Elsewhere, the army said a man who tried to stab a group of soldiers in the Palestinian town of Hizma, near Jerusalem, was killed.

“A terrorist accelerated in his vehicle towards IDF (Army) soldiers who were conducting counter-terrorism operations adjacent to the Hizma area,” the army said in a statement, without identifying the attacker.

“The terrorist took out a knife from his vehicle and attempted to attack with the knife. The troops killed the terrorist and foiled the terrorist attack attempt,” it said, adding that there were no military casualties.

There have been several attacks in Israel by Palestinian militants since the war in Gaza broke out on October 7 last year.

According to one, at least 30 people, including Israeli soldiers, have been killed in such attacks in Israel. AFP The tally is based on official Israeli figures.

The events on Sunday (October 27, 2024) came as Israel held ceremonies to mark the Hebrew calendar anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack, which sparked ongoing wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
