Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been chosen to lead the interim government in Bangladesh. The decision was taken at a crucial meeting chaired by Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin. The development comes a day after Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and fled the country.
Yunus, known as the ‘banker of the poor’ for his work in fighting poverty, was the first choice of the protesting students as chief advisor to the interim government.
The students’ proposal to make him the leader of the interim government was accepted in the meeting. The meeting was attended by students leading the reservation movement and the chiefs of the three armed forces.
Speaking to media after the meeting, student leaders said they had been assured that an interim government would be formed soon under the leadership of Yunus.
He has submitted a list of names of 10-14 prominent persons to join the interim government.
