Sri Lanka’s new government Police have been ordered to re-investigate some high-profile cases including 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks and the murder of a journalist from the Tamil minority community in 2005. The ruling National People’s Power, which won presidential elections last month, promised to re-investigate previous cases that were not resolved.
The Ministry of Public Security took action to identify any lapses in the investigation. Police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa said on Saturday (October 12, 2024), “The ministry has told the acting police chief that these cases should be re-investigated.”
The cases to be re-examined include the alleged scam in the issuance of Central Bank bonds in 2015, for which the then government was held responsible. Ranil WickramasingheFormer President, and the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks that killed more than 270 people, including 11 Indians.
The Catholic Church is demanding tougher action over what it alleges a politically motivated cover-up by previous governments over the attacks.
Other cases to be investigated include the murder of D. Sivaram, a journalist from the Tamil minority community, in 2005 and the abduction and disappearance in 2006 of a Tamil minority academician who was heading Eastern University at the time. The disappearance of two political party workers in the northern capital Jaffna in 2011 is also on the list.
