Moscow said on Sunday (September 1, 2024) that it had thwarted a “large-scale” drone attack on western Russia and another attack targeting the capital.
“Our defenders are repelling an attempted large-scale UAV attack on the Bryansk region bordering Ukraine,” regional governor Aleksandr Bogomaz said.
Bogomaz reported on Telegram that Russian forces identified and destroyed at least 26 drones, but there were no casualties or damage.
The regional governor said that on 21 August the military had foiled an attempt by a Ukrainian “reconnaissance-sabotage group” to infiltrate Bryansk.
The Ukrainian offensive on Russia’s neighbour Kursk has been ongoing since August 6.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the Russian military had destroyed five drones fired towards the capital on Sunday night.
The incursion comes more than a week after Sobyanin described one of the “largest ever” drone attacks against Moscow, in which officials said 11 aircraft were destroyed.
The Russian military also shot down drones overnight in the border areas of Belgorod and Voronezh, as well as in the Lipetsk and Ryazan regions farther north, although local authorities did not give exact numbers.
“The glass panes of three residential buildings in Belgorod have been damaged. In one private residence, a utility building has been completely destroyed,” Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.
In the western Oryol region, Governor Andrei Klychkov said a drone was intercepted.
On Wednesday, Ukrainian drones attacked two fuel depots in the Rostov region of southwestern Russia and the northern Kirov region, setting them on fire.
