Russian officials said on Wednesday (August 21, 2024) that Ukrainian drones carried out the biggest attack on Moscow since the fighting began in 2022 and destroyed all of them.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Russia destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight. The ministry said 11 were destroyed in the Moscow region, 23 in the Bryansk region, six in Belgorod, three in Kaluga and two in Kursk.

“This was the largest attempt ever to attack Moscow using drones,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel. He added that all drones were destroyed as tight security measures were put in place around the capital. Some Russian social media channels shared videos of drones apparently being destroyed by air defense systems, followed by car alarms.

Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, said his region was hit by a “massive” attack but that 23 drones were destroyed.
