Social media giant Meta Platforms will notify Brazilians How it intends to use their personal data to train generative artificial intelligence (AI)This information was given on Tuesday after the demand of the country’s data protection regulator.
Meta users in Brazil will receive warnings via email and notifications on Facebook and Instagram starting on Tuesday, and will be able to reject the company’s use of their data to train generative AI, a statement said.
Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) in July suspended Meta’s new privacy policy on the use of personal data to train AI, but overturned it last Friday and said Meta had agreed to release the disclosures.
In July, Meta also proactively suspended the use of generative AI tools in Brazil, including tools used to create popular AI-generated stickers for messaging platform WhatsApp. Brazil is WhatsApp’s second-largest customer base.
At the time, Meta said it had decided to suspend these tools while it engaged in talks with the ANPD to address the authority’s doubts over the use of generative AI.
Asked by Reuters on Tuesday if the devices would be restored once the ANPD lifts the suspension, Meta said only that the suspension was issued while negotiations with the ANPD were ongoing.
