Member of British journalist team dies after Russian missile hits hotel in eastern Ukraine

A British security consultant working with a team of journalists was shot dead. A Russian missile hit a hotel in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, Reuters The news agency confirmed this.

Ryan Evans, 38, was staying with his co-workers at the Hotel Sapphire in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region when it was struck by a Russian missile on Saturday night.

Two other members of the six-member Reuters crew were admitted to hospital with injuries.

Local authorities said the hotel was attacked by an Iskander-M Russian ballistic missile, causing injuries to the journalists, leaving cuts and bruises on their bodies.

Associated Press reporters at the scene reported the hotel was reduced to “rubble”, and that excavators were still being used to remove debris several hours after the attack.

Donetsk regional governor Vadim Filyashkin said that in addition to the hotel, a nearby multi-storey building was also destroyed.

Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region also came under Russian fire, resulting in several civilians being injured, regional governor Oleh Sinyhubov wrote on the Telegram messaging app on Sunday.

Five people were injured, including a 4-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, when two houses were damaged in a Russian attack in the Chuhuiv region of Kharkiv.

Eight people were injured when a two-storey house caught fire in the Russian air strike in the city of Kharkiv.

Ukrainian shelling killed five people in the Russian border region of Belgorod, officials said on Sunday.

Regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Sunday that 12 other people were wounded in the Russian village of Rakitno, 38 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, including a 16-year-old girl who was described as in critical condition.
