Meghalaya government handed over the body Awami League Former Bangladesh President Hamid Ansari on Saturday (August 31, 2024) handed over a letter to Bangladeshi authorities.
Emerald found dead The incident took place on August 26 at a sloping arecanut plantation in the Dona Bhoi area of the state’s East Jaintia Hills district. The spot is about 1.5 km from the India-Bangladesh border.
Meghalaya officials said the Bangladesh government had deputed an officer to bring the body from the district’s Khliehriat Civil Hospital. After identification and necessary paperwork, the body was handed over to the Dhaka representative.
The Awami League leader’s body was then taken to the Friendship Gate of BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh at Dawki from where it was taken across the border via Tamabil to Pirojpur district of Bangladesh.
Meghalaya police officials said Panna was identified through her passport found on her body. The state government did not share the post-mortem report, but local media quoted unnamed police officials as claiming she died of suffocation after being strangled.
Earlier, the Meghalaya government had informed New Delhi and Dhaka about the recovery of the body. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who is also the Home Minister, said on Friday (August 30, 2024) that the relatives of the deceased have identified the body and have left for Meghalaya.
He said, “After the forensic investigation report comes, the exact cause of death will be known and the case will be investigated further.”
