US Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on the first day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago and expressed gratitude to President Joe Biden for his “historic leadership”.
“Thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our country, and for all that you continue to do. We will be forever grateful,” Harris said at the DNC on Monday night.
“I want to start by celebrating our incredible President, Joe Biden,” she said to a cheering crowd.
Biden, who has ruled himself out of running for re-election, will deliver the keynote address at the DNC tonight. Harris hopes to make a case for choosing and defeated Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Harris is the first black woman and Asian American to lead a major party ticket.
She entered the convention with a bright smile and unmistakable confidence, reflecting the support of nearly half of the country — 48% — who hold a very or somewhat favorable view of her, according to a recent poll. Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research,
Earlier this month, the vice president was officially confirmed as the Democratic nominee in a virtual vote, solidifying party unity after Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her. As the campaign heads toward November, Harris expressed confidence in the nation’s collective power, saying people from all walks of life will “come together and declare with one voice, as one people: We are moving forward.”
Harris will deliver her formal acceptance speech on Thursday night (IST).
