Harris, who has been serving as the first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president since 2021, is considering vice presidential candidates to balance her ticket and appeal to a broader range of voters. According to Reuters, she is considering a list of mostly white, male candidates.

On Monday, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, who is in his second term, said he would not seek a vice presidential role in Harris’s campaign.

“I strongly support Vice President Harris’ presidential campaign. I know she is going to win, and I am proud to have been selected for this role,” Cooper wrote on X.

He said, “It just wasn’t the right time for North Carolina and for me to potentially be on the national ticket. As I’ve said from the beginning, she has a great list of people to choose from, and we’ll all work to make sure she wins.”

Also Monday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said on CBS Mornings that she was “not part of the vetting process” for the vice presidential running mate.

“I have told everyone, including the people of Michigan, that I will remain as governor until the end of my term at the end of 2026,” she said, Reuters reported.

According to two sources, Harris took a break from campaigning this weekend to hold private conversations with several potential allies, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Reuters reports.

Other candidates being considered include Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Governor JB Pritzker, Arizona U.S. Senator Mark Kelly, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Governor Gavin Newsom, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

It remains to be seen whether the Democrats will agree to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as their presidential nominee and who will be her vice presidential running mate.
