Nearly 10 people, including two children, were killed and five wounded in an Israeli attack on a residential building in the southern Lebanon town of Nabatiyeh, state news agency NNA reported on Saturday.
NNA said all the victims were Syrian citizens. It added that the final number of those killed in the attack would be announced after DNA tests were carried out to determine the victims’ identities.
The Israeli military said the airstrike targeted a weapons depot used by Hezbollah militants.
The attack comes at a time when ceasefire talks between the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and Israel were halted in Doha on Friday and negotiators are scheduled to meet again next week.
Tensions have run high in the region in recent weeks, after a rocket attack blamed on Hezbollah in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights killed 12 children and teenagers. Israel responded by killing a top Hezbollah commander in a suburb of Beirut.
Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate against Israel, as has Iran, for the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political head of the Palestinian Hamas group, in Tehran.
