Garment factories owned by Indian companies in Bangladesh have resumed functioning following the recent unrest in the country, while movement of trucks between the neighbouring countries has resumed at the Petrapole border, a senior Commerce Ministry official said.
“There was a lot of disruption and uncertainty for a few days, but now these units have reopened and have indicated to us that there are no operational issues now,” the official said. The development assumes significance as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had last Saturday raised concerns over investments by Indian firms in the country, especially in the textiles sector.
She said many of these investments came from Tamil Nadu-based players. “The investments were made in good faith because they felt the textile and apparel industries could do well and they did well,” Ms Sitharaman said, adding that she hoped these investments would be secured.
