Hamas names Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar as chief after Haniyeh’s killing


Following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh on 31 July, Hamas appointed its Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar as its head.

Notably, Ismail Haniya was assassinated. After his residence in Tehran was targeted, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement, Reuters report. Haniyeh was in the Iranian capital for the swearing-in ceremony of President Masoud Pezeshkian.

In a statement, Hamas said Haniyeh was assassinated in “a treacherous Zionist attack on his residence in Tehran.”

The IRGC said Haniyeh was killed by a “short-range missile” with a 7-kilogram warhead fired from outside his residence in Tehran. Reuters The report said the attack was carried out by Israel with the support of the “criminal” US government.

“Based on the investigation and analysis, this terrorist operation was carried out with the firing of a short-range projectile equipped with a warhead weighing approximately 7 kilograms with a powerful explosion from outside the guests’ residence,” the IRGC said in the statement.

However, the United States has denied having any advance knowledge of the assassination plot.
