A gunman opened fire on German police on Thursday (September 5, 2024) near Munich’s Nazi-era documentation center and the Israeli consulate, and was shot dead by officers, the Bavarian state’s interior minister said.
“The police responded with armed force against the criminal, who was carrying a rifle, and fired several shots,” minister Joachim Herrmann said, adding that the gunman died of his wounds.
Mr. Harman said it was clear that the crime scene, located near the documentation center and the Israeli diplomatic mission, could provide more clues about the gunman’s motive.
The minister also pointed out that Thursday (September 5) marks the 52nd anniversary of the horrific attack by a Palestinian terrorist group on the Israeli team during the 1972 Olympic Games.
Munich police wrote on social media platform X that after the shooting, “there were no indications of any other suspects” and no one was injured.
The Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism is located on the site of the former Nazi Party headquarters and adjacent to the Israeli Consulate in the southern German city.
A police helicopter was flying in the sky above the area and the sound of police sirens echoed in the streets.
Daily Pictures Pictures showed armed police wearing helmets and body armour in the central area of the city. Police advised the public that a number of police officers were “moving to the operation site in the area of the NS Documentation Centre”.
“To ensure they can work without disruption, we request that you avoid the area as much as possible.”
