Flash floods following torrential rains on Indonesia’s eastern Ternate island killed 11 people on Sunday (August 25, 2024).
Search and rescue teams working together with local residents have recovered 10 bodies in Rua village in North Maluku province. According to Bram Madya Temara, an official with the island’s search and rescue agency, the team is working to recover another body.
The flash floods swept away residential areas and cut off the main road and access to Rua. Dozens of homes and buildings were buried in mud.
Heavy rains frequently trigger landslides and flooding in Indonesia, where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near floodplains.
