Sweden on Thursday confirmed its first case of ampox, a viral infection that spreads through close contact.
For the second time in two years, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared ampox a global public health emergency following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has since spread to other countries.
“We have confirmed this afternoon that a case of a more severe type of ampox, called clade I, has been detected in Sweden,” Minister of Health and Social Affairs Jakob Forsmed said at a press conference.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.
