Ferris wheel catches fire at Leipzig music festival in Germany

Two cable cars on a Ferris wheel caught fire at a music festival near the eastern German city of Leipzig on Saturday evening (August 17). According to local police, four people suffered burn injuries, while one person was injured after falling.

First rescue workers at the scene and people riding the Ferris wheel were exposed to smoke. A total of 18 people were taken to hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated and organisers did not immediately issue a statement. Local media reported that the festival continued after the incident and the area where the fire started was cordoned off.

The Highfield Festival is held near Stormthaler Lake in the Grosspöysna constituency, and is one of the largest rock music festivals in the region, attracting up to 25,000 people.
