Former US President and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has agreed to Fox News’ offer to hold a presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris on September 4. This comes after presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Harris won the presidential election. More than 1,000 delegate votes are needed to secure the Democratic nomination.
This will be the first time both Trump and Harris will be part of a presidential debate. President Joe Biden withdraws from the race following mounting pressure from Democrats who raised concerns about his age and mental acuity His performance in the debate against Trump in June was lackluster.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the presidential debate against Harris would be held in Pennsylvania. He also said the debate should be held in front of an “audience across the arena”, while the debate held by CNN in June had no audience.
He said, “I have agreed with Fox News to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4. The debate was originally scheduled on ABC against Sleepy Joe Biden, but has been scrapped as Biden will no longer be a participant… The Fox News debate will be held at a designated arena in the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”
He said, “The debate will be moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, and the rules will be the same as my debate with Sleepy Joe, who has been treated very badly by his party – but with a full arena audience!”
Fox News invited Trump and Harris to a presidential debate on its network on September 17. Harris said she was “ready” to debate.
Earlier, Trump had said he would not debate the vice president as he is not an official candidate since Biden withdrew his re-election bid and endorsed him on July 21.
To bolster his argument that Harris did not have enough support for her presidential campaign, Trump said former President Barack Obama has not yet endorsed her. However, Obama and his wife Michelle supported him soon after.
The presidential election will be held on November 5.
