Chinese President Xi Jinping told leaders of the BRICS emerging economies on Thursday (Oct 24, 2024) that the world was facing “grave challenges” and urged the grouping to become a “stabilizing force”.
Mr Xi was speaking on the final day of the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan, a forum Moscow hopes will help build a united front of the countries against the West.
Addressing the assembled leaders, Mr Xi said, “the common march of the global South towards modernity is a major event in world history”.
Mr Xi said, “We must be a stabilizing force for peace, strengthen global security governance and seek solutions to hotspot issues that address both symptoms and root causes.”
“The world still faces serious challenges to its peaceful development,” he warned.
He also called for a ceasefire in Gaza and a halt to further conflict in Lebanon.
Mr Xi said, “We must continue to push for a ceasefire in Gaza, resume the two-state solution and prevent the spread of war in Lebanon.”
“There must be no more suffering and destruction in Palestine and Lebanon,” he said.
