Popular Bangladeshi actress Rokeya Prachi was allegedly attacked by a violent mob on August 15 when she was going to 32 Bangabandhu Road to pay tribute to the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his Martyrdom Day.
In an exclusive conversation with India Today TV, Prachi said that during the attack, the angry mob tore down her posters and threatened to kill her.
“They were all supporters and activists of BNP and Jamaat Islami. They wanted to kill me. After beating me and throwing me out, they danced. Clothes were torn, women were physically harassed,” Prachi said.
The famous Bangladeshi actress has become a victim of the growing wave of violence that has swept Bangladesh in the past few weeks.
The crisis has become increasingly dangerous for Awami League leaders and those supporting former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country on August 5 amid violent student protests.
Many leaders of the former ruling party have gone underground fearing for their lives. It is worth noting that this obstacle is not limited to politicians only, but has now reached actors as well.
Prachi said, “I don’t know if I will be safe tomorrow. I don’t find anything meaningful in this newfound freedom.”
To give a better picture of the current situation, Prachi compared it to the situation in Bangladesh in 1971. “We have heard about 1971, this is even bigger than that. Many Hindus have been attacked. Elements are trying to erase the memories of Bangabandhu and his self-sacrifice,” she said. “They want to change the national anthem. This protest is a completely different protest; the quota issue has been kept as a sham.”
The actor also questioned who runs the show in Bangladesh?
Prachi said, “I don’t know who is running the country at this time, they are just committing murders and hanging the bodies.”
She said, “Are we under any Nobel laureate or quota army? Even at gunpoint I will not settle for anything else in my country. What is happening today is an attempt to destroy the roots of Bangladesh.”
