Flights were temporarily suspended at two German airports on Thursday morning as climate activists took over the airports as part of a major protest targeting four airports across the country.
The Last Generation campaign group said in a statement that activists had blocked or reduced traffic at Berlin, Cologne-Bonn, Nuremberg and Stuttgart airports and published photographs of activists with their hands glued to the terminals.
Nuremberg Airport said on its website that flights were suspended from 0342 GMT until further notice and warned that passengers would face delays, while Cologne-Bonn Airport said on social media platform X that flights were currently suspended and police were dealing with “unauthorised persons”.
Police were present at Berlin airport and were able to remove the two protesters who had entered the airspace by cutting through the fence, a police spokesman said. Flight operations were not affected.
A spokesman for Stuttgart Airport was not immediately available for comment.
The group listed several countries in Europe and North America where it said similar disruptions are planned as part of the protest campaign, which calls on the German government to pursue a global agreement to phase out oil, gas and coal by 2030.
German politicians have demanded better security for the country’s airports after climate activists disrupted air traffic for two days last month by breaking down fences at the country’s busiest airport, including in Frankfurt.
