According to a Taliban government minister, Afghan women are forbidden from praying or reading the Quran out loud in front of other women.
This is the latest ban on following women morality law Which bans them from raising their voice and showing their face outside the house. After the sixth grade they are already excluded from education, many public places and most jobs.
No one from the Ministry of Vice and Virtue was immediately available on Wednesday to clarify the officer’s comments or confirm whether the prohibition would also become part of the morality laws.
During an event in eastern Logar province on Sunday, Deputy Minister of Virtue and Virtue Khaled Hanafi said: “It is prohibited for an adult woman to read or recite Quranic verses in front of another adult woman. Even shouting Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) is not allowed.”
He said that speaking in similar expressions “Subhanallah,” Not even another word was allowed at the heart of the Islamic faith. He told the gathering that a woman was not allowed to give Azaan. “So, there’s definitely no permission for singing.”
The audio of Hanafi’s comments was shared on the ministry’s social media platforms but was later removed.
The ministry on Tuesday said a nationwide awareness program about the laws is underway involving ministry officials at the provincial and district levels.
“Organizing such events will contribute to shaping public perception and increasing awareness about divine rulings,” the ministry said.
Afghan provinces already prevent the media from showing photographs of living things, another controversial and widely criticized feature of ethics laws.
The Taliban established a ministry for “propagation of virtue and prevention of evil” after seizing power in 2021.
Since then, the ministry has implemented decrees issued by the Taliban leadership that have adverse effects on women and girls, such as dress codes, separate education and employment, and having a male guardian when traveling.
