A fire broke out in central Kiev as a result of a Russian drone attack, the Ukrainian capital’s military administration said on Sunday (November 3, 2024) morning, with the military saying air defense was trying to thwart the drone attack.

“Information about the scale of the fire, destruction or possible injuries is being clarified,” Serhiy Popko, head of Kiev’s military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app.

It was not immediately clear whether the fire in the Shevchenkivsky district was caused by a direct drone strike or by debris fallen from a destroyed drone.

“Emergency crews were dispatched to the district to search for the site of the fire,” Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said on Telegram.

reuters Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions and seeing plumes of smoke rising from residential buildings.

The Shevchenkivskyi district near the center of Kyiv is a busy area with a cluster of universities, restaurants and tourist attractions.

Kiev, its surrounding region and much of eastern Ukraine remained under intermittent airstrike alert overnight, according to an alert posted on social media by the Ukrainian military.
