Vandalism hits multiple telecommunications lines in France during Paris Olympics

Acts of vandalism have disrupted several telecommunications lines, affecting fibre lines and fixed and mobile phone services, the French government said on Monday, as cities around France host events for the Paris Olympics 2024.

The vandalism comes just days after arson attacks in France disrupted train networks across France just hours before the Olympics opening ceremony. The country’s telecom operators Bouygues and Free confirmed their services had been affected, with French media also reporting damage to lines operated by SFR.

However, the full extent of the impact is still unclear, including whether Olympic activities have been affected.

Foreign Minister Marina Ferrari, in charge of digital affairs, posted on X that telecommunications infrastructure was damaged in several areas during the night from Sunday to Monday.

A French police official said news agency AP At least six administrative departments have been affected, including the area around Marseille, which is hosting the Olympic football and sailing competitions.

The Paris Olympics organisers have not yet commented on the situation.
