UAE says residence of its ambassador in Khartoum attacked by Sudanese military aircraft

The United Arab Emirates said its ambassador’s residence in Khartoum was struck by Sudanese military aircraft early Monday, describing it as a “heinous attack.”

The UAE Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the attack on its ambassador’s residence had caused extensive damage to the building. The Sudanese military had no immediate comment on the allegation.

The Sudanese military has repeatedly accused the UAE of providing arms and aid to the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) in Sudan’s 17-month-old war. The Gulf state has denied the allegations. UN sanctions monitors found allegations that the UAE provided military assistance to the RSF as credible.

In April last year, war broke out between the Sudanese army and the RSF over free elections. The United Nations says about 25 million people – half Sudan’s population – need aid, famine is looming and about 8 million have fled their homes.

“The ministry stressed the importance of protecting diplomatic buildings and residences of embassy staff in accordance with the treaties and customs that regulate diplomatic relations,” the UAE statement said.
