Landslides cause flash floods Typhoon Yagi At least 16 people were killed and many were missing in northern Vietnam, state media reported on Wednesday (September 11, 2024).
A total of 128 people were buried in the landslide that struck Nu village in Lao Cai province on Tuesday (September 10), according to various reports, at least 30 people were rescued but many are still missing.
Typhoon Yagi hit Vietnam over the weekend, bringing winds of up to 149 kilometres (92 miles) per hour and so much rain that it caused the first flooding in decades, according to locals.
The landslide occurred in a remote hilly area and rescue operations are difficult, the state government-run Tuoi Tre Internet services were down in the area and traffic was also disrupted, the newspaper said.

“Authorities are mobilizing forces to continue searching for survivors in the landslide area,” district party chief Hoang Quoc Bao said.
The landslide comes after thousands of people were forced to flee their homes on Tuesday, with many stranded on rooftops and pleading for help on social media.
Climate change is causing hurricanes in the region to form closer to the coast, grow faster and stay over land longer, according to a study published in July.
