Two new murder cases have been registered against ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her former cabinet ministers for the killing of three people, including two BNP activists, during quota reform protests in the country, according to media reports.
The cases, filed in Dhaka courts on Friday (August 30, 2024), are the latest in a series of cases filed against the 76-year-old leader after he resigned and fled to India on August 5 following massive protests by students against the quota system in government jobs.
With this, the number of cases against Ms Hasina has risen to 84, including 70 cases of murder, eight of crimes against humanity and genocide, three of alleged kidnapping and three of other charges. the daily star The newspaper reported this news.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activist Matiur Rahman filed a case in Kishoreganj over the killing of fellow party workers Zulkar Hossain, 38, and Anjana, 28, on August 4.
According to the statement of the case, the procession of student movement and BNP workers was attacked by Awami League leaders with firearms, sticks and sharp weapons. Some BNP workers took refuge in the house of a district Awami League leader in the nearby Khorampatri area, where they were held hostage by Hasina-led party workers and then set on fire, killing Hossain and Anjana.
Ms Hasina and former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader were among 88 accused in the case.
A case has been registered in Munshiganj over the death of a 22-year-old youth, who was shot dead during a student-led agitation in the city’s supermarket area on August 4.
313 people, including Ms Hasina, Quader, other Awami League leaders and activists of its student wing, have been arrested. Student LeagueHe was the accused in this case.
“No arrest has been made in the case so far,” the report quoted Munshiganj Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Thandar Khairul Hasan as saying.
Separately in Gazipur, 57 people, including Ms. Hasina, were accused in a case in which an 18-year-old college student lost her eyesight. According to court documents, the victim was shot in the right eye during an attack on protesters ordered by Hasina and others.
More than 230 people have been killed in Bangladesh in incidents of violence that erupted across the country following the fall of the Hasina government, taking the death toll to over 600 since massive protests launched by students in mid-July against a controversial quota system in government jobs.
The Hasina-led government was removed and an interim government was formed with 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus appointed as its chief advisor.
